Ingredients in Crock Pot Spinach Artichoke Dip
Ingredients You’ll Need:
- Frozen Spinach – No need to thaw it! Just break it up a bit before adding it to the slow cooker. You can also use fresh spinach, sautéed first to remove excess moisture.
- Artichoke Hearts – Use unmarinated canned or jarred artichoke hearts, drained and roughly chopped. If you only have marinated ones, rinse them well to tone down the flavor.
- Yellow Onion – Finely diced for flavor and texture. White onion or shallots can be used in a pinch.
- Garlic – Pressed or finely minced. Fresh is best, but ½ to 1 teaspoon of garlic powder can work in a pinch.
- Cream Cheese – An 8 oz block, cut into chunks. Use full-fat for the creamiest result. Neufchâtel cheese can be substituted for a lighter option.
- Sour Cream & Mayonnaise – These add creaminess and a little tang. You can substitute Greek yogurt for either or both if you want a bit more protein or a lighter version.
- Mozzarella Cheese – For that classic cheesy, melty texture. You can swap in Monterey Jack or Fontina if you want something with a similar melt.
- Parmesan Cheese – Adds salty, nutty flavor. Freshly grated is best, but pre-shredded will work too. You could also try Pecorino Romano for a bolder taste.
- Red Pepper Flakes – Just a pinch adds a subtle heat. Feel free to leave it out or add more to taste.
- Kosher Salt – Helps balance all the creamy flavors. Adjust to your taste after everything is melted and stirred together.
Ingredient Variations
To make it even more special, try one of these twists:
• Add bacon – Stir in some cooked, crumbled bacon for a smoky kick.
• Make it spicy – Add a diced jalapeño or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
• Add shredded chicken – For a more filling dip, mix in cooked shredded chicken.
• Make it extra cheesy – Top with extra mozzarella and broil in an oven-safe dish just before serving.
How to Make Spinach Artichoke Dip in the Slow Cooker
This is such an easy party appetizer!
• Prep the slow cooker: Spray the crock with nonstick cooking spray.
• Add the ingredients: Combine everything except the cream cheese in the slow cooker and stir.
• Top with cream cheese: Cut the cream cheese into chunks and place on top of the mixture.
• Slow cook: Cover and cook on HIGH for 1½ to 2 hours.
• Stir and serve: Once hot and bubbly, stir well to incorporate the cream cheese. Switch to WARM until ready to serve.
Tips for the Best Spinach Artichoke Dip
• Use block cheese when possible – It melts better and gives you the creamiest texture.
• Serve it warm – Keep the dip on the warm setting so it stays creamy throughout your event.
• Use the right size slow cooker – A 3 to 4-quart slow cooker is just right for this dip. If yours is larger, keep an eye on the cook time and consider doubling the recipe so it doesn’t dry out. If your slow cooker is much smaller, halve the recipe or cook it in batches.
• This recipe can be doubled easily for a crowd – Use a 6 to 7-quart slow cooker, and increase the cook time slightly — usually about 2½ to 3 hours on HIGH. Stir halfway through if possible for even cooking & melting.
What to Serve With Spinach Artichoke Dip
This dip pairs well with just about anything:
• Tortilla chips or pita chips
• Crackers or crostini
• Sliced baguette
• Carrot sticks, celery, bell peppers, or cucumber
• You can even serve this dip over pasta!
Make-Ahead
This crock pot spinach artichoke dip is make-ahead friendly!
Make-Ahead Instructions:
• Assemble all the ingredients in your slow cooker insert, cover it, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before cooking.
• Take the insert out of the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for 30 to 60 minutes before heating. This step is important to prevent the ceramic crock from cracking when exposed to sudden heat.
Storage & Reheating
Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days.
To Reheat: Microwave individual portions or heat in the slow cooker or oven until warmed through.
Freezing: Not recommended – The texture may change after thawing.
