Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

This is one of those recipes from my youth. I remember the Salisbury steaks as a school lunch, and they were in those frozen TV dinners we sometimes had. Now you can make Salisbury Steaks in your Crock Pot. It's easy!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SALISBURY STEAK AND A HAMBURGER?

Hamburgers are basically a ground beef patty seasoned with salt & pepper, grilled or fried, and served on a bun with condiments.

Salisbury Steaks, named for the man who first came up with the recipe, are smaller patties, more heavily seasoned, and cooked in the gravy.

The seasonings usually include onion, Worcestershire sauce, bread crumbs, egg, garlic, and more. Almost like meatloaf, though no milk.

What goes with Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak?

I like to serve Salisbury Steaks with mashed potatoes. Gotta make use of all that wonderful gravy! You could also serve them over rice, cauliflower rice, etc.

Since these crock pot Salisbury Steaks are rich and beefy, a lighter vegetable like a salad, corn, or green beans goes really well with them.

Slow Cooker Salisbury Steaks with Gravy are easy to put together. Just combine the ingredients as in a meatloaf.

Then form the patties, brown them and then the onion and add them to the crock.

Mix up the gravy ingredients and pour it over the patties, cook, then thicken the gravy at the end. Easy!

Do I need to use the wine?

Not necessarily, but use it if you can as it adds such good depth of flavor to the gravy. You can also use cooking sherry, unsweetened grape or pomegranate juice, or just more beef broth.

What if I don't want to use mushrooms?

No problem. Just omit them. They do add a nice earthy flavor to the gravy, but if you don't like mushrooms, you can leave them out.

    Hi!
Do you have to brown the hamburger before putting in the crockpot?

Thank you! Wow, this was really delicious, and the gravy was gorgeous. I used 2 lbs of ground beef and 1/3 cup of sherry instead of the red wine, and cooked for 4 hrs on high. For us it served more like 4 adults, because the patties really cooked down and everyone had to have two a piece! Could this easily be doubled to feed a crowd?

Yes, you can double it. A lower fat meat won't shrink as much, if you want to try that.

Made this last year for the first time to have something ready to eat after our community golf cart Christmas parade. I’ll be making it again for the same reason this year, only this time I’m making it a tradition.

So delicious!! I made the recipe as directed and even bought a bottle of red wine just for this recipe, and I wouldn’t change a thing!! My husband raved about it, and even my extremely picky 8 year old gave me a thumbs up (I made sure he didn’t have any onions or mushrooms on his)! I will be making this again and again!!!

Would cube steak be a good substitute for the patties?
