Iced Coffee Protein Shake

When I get home from the gym, I like to have a smoothie or a shake with a scoop of protein powder in it. That and a frozen banana! I always feel good after drinking one.

This is a fun protein shake because it also has a special ingredient, coffee! Iced coffee is a treat, and with the added banana and protein powder this becomes kind of a hybrid shake-smoothie.

You can use decaf coffee if you don’t want caffeine. If you do, this is only a cup, and this recipe makes enough for two shakes, so you’re only having half a cup of coffee. Not too bad!

Which almond milk to use?

I prefer plain, unsweetened almond milk. That way I can use raw honey to sweeten it if I want to. Sometimes I will use vanilla almond milk when I want something different.

Which Protein powder is best?

That’s a really tough one to answer. There are hundreds of protein powders on the market, and the one you choose will depend on your diet and your goal.

Some protein powders, such as hemp, may not be right for this iced coffee shake. I do like hemp protein in my smoothies though.

I use a chocolate protein powder because I like the flavor, it isn’t chalky, and it has the amount of protein I want. Your needs/likes/wants may be very different from mine.

Just for the record, this is the Chocolate Protein Powder I use (affiliate).

Some ways to change up this iced coffee protein shake recipe

You can change up the flavor to suite your mood.

  • Use vanilla protein powder and vanilla almond milk.
  • Use vanilla almond milk and chocolate flavored protein powder.
  • Add a scoop of raw cacao powder for an antioxidant and flavor boost.
  • Freeze coffee in ice cube trays and use them for a stronger coffee flavor.

This Ice Coffee looks absolutely refreshing! As I wrote in my Pinterest comment, I’m always looking for new ideas to spice up my morning routine!

Thank you so much for this recipe. I just got into smoothie making and I wanted something using cooled coffee concentrate, which I love and buy often at Trader Joeโ€™s. Fantastic recipe. Tastes a bit like ice cream. I used half a tablespoon of honey for 1 serving. I might add a bit more next time. I also used oat milk since I prefer that over almond milk. I also calculated the calories based on the specific protein powder I was using and the oat milk I used. Your calculations were bang on, so bravo. Lol

  3. Shannon says:

I used the ice, sweetened vanilla almond milk, cafe’ latte protein powder, banana frozen if I have it, regular if I don’t have it frozen, cacao powder since I didn’t use chocolate protein, and I only use the honey when I need a little extra energy (I only do half to 1 tbs) I’m not big on sweet stuff in the morning. This is my new go to iced coffee recipe.
    Thanks!!!

I really like this recipe! Most don’t have enough coffee taste. I used chocolate oat milk, that’s all I had on hand. I used regular ice cubes, chocolate protein powder with the frozen banana and honey. This will be really good with regular almond milk too and maybe vanilla protein powder. The ideas are endless ๐Ÿ˜‰ thanks for this recipe!

I think it was excellent! And I only added one Tbsp of honey and it was sweet enough for me. Thank you fir the recipe..Iโ€™m excited to try vanilla protein powder next time.

I did this without honey. I used so lean so clean chocolate protein powder and vanilla almond milk it was all I had since my kids drink it. Came out good. Really only taste banana and the protein powder.might try coffee ice cubes next time

This is so good!! I was pleasantly surprised. I subbed a date for honey and oat milk for almond because that was all I had. Used orgain superfood protein powder vanilla and then added cacao powder to do chocolate like you did. Delicious!! Not sure if I can drink coffee normal ever again haha. Iโ€™m going to use your suggestion with the coffee ice cubes. I think that would make it more Frappuccino like. Thank you!!
