Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes and Apples

When it comes to a Holiday meal, especially Thanksgiving, the side dishes are what I look forward to the most! Using my slow cooker to make them frees up precious oven space and doubles as a warmer for the food.

Sweet Potatoes or Yams?

Chances are you have never even seen an actual yam before. They are mostly grown in Africa. What you see in the grocery stores and in the cans are sweet potatoes.

If you happen to come across an actual yam, don't use it unless you are familiar with them! I hear they don't really taste all that great.

You can use the orange fleshed sweet potatoes or the white. But the color of the orange ones is so much nicer for a Holiday side dish!

Which Apples Are the Best to Use?

Any apple you like the flavor of. I prefer a sweet apple as I like a sweeter outcome. Use what you have!

I often won't peel my apples when I plan on cooking them down like this, but I do peel them for this Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes and Apples recipe.

What size slow cooker is best to get?

I would suggest a 4-quart slow cooker to start with. If you have plans to cook larger amounts of food, or larger sized food, then start with a 6-quart slow cooker.

I would strongly suggest having one large and one small slow cooker as most side dishes are not made in huge amounts and cooking them in a large slow cooker can dry them out and over cook them.

Slow cookers perform best when they are about ⅔ full. This crock pot sweet potatoes and apples recipe works best in a 4 qt size, unless you double it.

These sound wonderful, but the addition of sage concerns me..can you taste it, or does it just add something w/o being noticeable? We've been getting beautiful, delicious huge sweet potatoes and I'd love to make this but I'm dubious about the sage....I could just leave it out, of course.

The sage adds a savory element that balances out the sweetness. It is not overpowering, but you can tell it is in there. Maybe try a half teaspoon and see how you like it, or just leave it out.
