Easy Halloween Pumpkin Patch Dirt Cups

Underneath those little pumpkin patches is a light, creamy chocolate pudding, with plenty of crushed Oreo “dirt” on top. They’re just as delicious as they are cute!

I added a few squiggly green frosting vines to mine. They don’t have to be perfect. Pumpkin vines grow every which way anyway!

You can make these ahead of time, which is always helpful when you’re getting ready for a party.

Why You’ll Love These Pumpkin Patch Dirt Cups

  • No baking. Just prepare the pudding, layer the ingredients, and decorate.
  • Simple ingredients. Instant pudding, Cool Whip, and Oreo cookies make these especially easy.
  • Fun to decorate. Candy pumpkins and green icing turn ordinary dirt cups into little pumpkin patches.
  • Make ahead. Prepare the pudding in advance and assemble the cups when you’re ready.
  • Individual servings. No cutting or scooping needed!

Pumpkin Patch Dirt Cups Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients to make these cute Halloween desserts!

For exact amounts, please see the recipe card below.

Chocolate Fudge Instant Pudding Mix, Cold Milk, Cool Whip, Oreo Cookies, Candy Pumpkins, Green Decorating Icing (optional)

A few ingredient tips:

  • Pudding: Use two 3.9-ounce boxes of regular instant chocolate fudge pudding, not cook-and-serve or sugar-free pudding.
  • Cookies: Crush the whole Oreo cookies, including the filling, into fine crumbs.
  • Cool Whip: Thaw it in the refrigerator before using. It makes the chocolate pudding lighter and creamier.
  • Candy pumpkins: Look for the little mellowcreme pumpkins sold with Halloween candy.
  • Green icing: Use ready-made decorating icing for the vines, or skip it for a simpler pumpkin patch.

How to Make Pumpkin Patch Dirt Cups

These easy dirt cups come together in a few simple steps. Be sure to allow time for the pudding mixture to chill before assembling.

Chocolate pudding being whisked, whole Oreo cookies in a food processor, and finely crushed Oreo cookie crumbs
  • Prepare the pudding. Whisk the pudding mix and cold milk together for 2 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes to thicken.
  • Crush the cookies. While the pudding thickens, crush the Oreos into fine crumbs using a food processor, or place them in a zip-top bag and crush with a rolling pin.
Cool Whip being folded into chocolate pudding, finished creamy pudding mixture, and Oreo crumbs added to dessert cups
  • Add the Cool Whip. Gently fold the thawed Cool Whip into the pudding until smooth and evenly combined. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  • Start the layers. Add about 2 tablespoons of Oreo crumbs to the bottom of each clear dessert cup.

  • Add the pudding. Spoon the chilled pudding mixture evenly over the cookie crumbs, leaving room for the topping. Smooth the pudding with the back of a small spoon or a tiny spatula.
  • Make the dirt. Sprinkle about 3 tablespoons of Oreo crumbs over the pudding in each cup.

  • Decorate the pumpkin patches. Arrange 2 or 3 candy pumpkins on top of each cup. If desired, pipe thin green icing vines around the pumpkins. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Tips and Variations

  • Choose your cup size. I used 10-ounce clear cups and made 8 generously sized desserts. For smaller, kid-friendly portions, use 6-ounce cups. You should get approximately 10–12 smaller servings.
  • Make the pumpkin patches your own. Arrange the pumpkins in different positions and add as many or as few vines as you like.
  • Make spooky dirt cups. Instead of pumpkins, decorate with candy eyeballs or gummy worms.
  • Use clear dessert cups. They show off the layers of chocolate pudding and Oreo cookie crumbs.

Make Ahead and Storage

You can prepare the pudding mixture and crush the cookies a day in advance. Keep the pudding refrigerated and the Oreo crumbs in an airtight container until ready to assemble.

For the best appearance, add the top cookie layer, candy pumpkins, and icing vines closer to serving time.

Store assembled dirt cups covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The Oreo crumbs will soften as they sit, but they’ll still taste good!

I don’t recommend freezing these pudding cups because the texture can change when thawed.

Ingredients

  • 2 (3.9-ounce boxes) Chocolate Fudge Instant Pudding Mix
  • 4 cups Cold Milk
  • 2 cups Cool Whip thawed
  • 37 Oreo Cookies including filling
  • 16 to 24 Candy Pumpkins 2 to 3 per cup
  • Green Decorating Icing optional, for vines

Instructions

Prepare the Pudding

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk the instant chocolate pudding mix and cold milk together for 2 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes to thicken.

Crush the Oreos

  • While the pudding thickens, place the Oreo cookies in a food processor and pulse until finely crushed. Alternatively, place the cookies in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin.

Add the Cool Whip and Chill

  • Gently fold the thawed Cool Whip into the thickened pudding until smooth and evenly combined. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Assemble the Dirt Cups

  • Add about 2 Tablespoons of Oreo crumbs to the bottom of each of eight clear 10-ounce dessert cups.
  • Spoon the chilled pudding mixture evenly over the Oreo crumbs, leaving room for the topping. Use the back of a small spoon or a small spatula to smooth the pudding into an even layer.
  • Sprinkle about 3 Tablespoons of the remaining crushed Oreos over the pudding in each cup to resemble dirt.

Decorate the Pumpkin Patches

  • Arrange 2 or 3 candy pumpkins on top of each dessert cup.
  • If desired, pipe thin green icing vines around the pumpkins to make the cups look like little pumpkin patches.
  • Refrigerate the assembled dirt cups until ready to serve.

Notes

Cup Size: This recipe was tested using eight 10-ounce dessert cups, which make generous servings. For smaller portions, use 6-ounce cups. The recipe should make approximately 10–12 smaller dirt cups, depending on how full they are.
Make Ahead: Prepare the pudding mixture and cookie crumbs a day ahead. Refrigerate the pudding mixture, and keep the cookie crumbs in an airtight container on the counter.
Storage: Refrigerate assembled cups for up to 2 days.
