Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats

I used to make my steel cut oats on the stovetop. I never loved the texture. When I got my Instant Pot, I decided to try pressure cooking them, and I loved the results! They come out creamy, with just a bit of chewy texture.

I love being able to set them in the Instant Pot with my extras (raisins, vanilla, apples, etc.) and go get ready for work! When I come downstairs, they are ready to eat!

I usually make 4 servings of Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats at a time, which is really two servings for us. Cooking the oats directly in the inner liner of the pressure cooker works great for that amount.

What if you want to make a single serving, or just want to cook the oats directly in a bowl or baking dish?
Making oats using the Pot-in-Pot (or PIP) method is perfect for making one serving, or when you want to use milk, sugar, and ingredients that might scorch. Or, you just want to cook directly in a bowl or other dish. Make sure it is an oven-safe bowl or dish first! You can use a stainless steel bowl or dish, too. I have included instructions in the recipe card below for the PIP method.

You can also set your timer delay to automatically start cooking Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats!
Set the timer so that the oats start about 30 minutes before you are going to eat them. This gives enough time for the pot to build pressure, and the cook time, and natural release. To do this, first get everything in the pot and put the lid on and set the steam release knob to the Sealing position, just as you normally would.
1) Press the Manual or Pressure Cook button.
2) Press the + or - button to select the cook time (10 minutes, for example).
3) Press the Timer button (the hour will flash) and use the + or - button to choose how many hours from now you want it to start.
4) Press the Timer button again (the minutes will flash) and use the + or - button to choose the minutes, in 10 minute increments.
Then, after a few seconds it will beep, and the timer is all set! The green light on the Timer button will be on, and the time will begin counting down. Now you can go to bed and wake up to breakfast!

Course: Breakfast
Cuisine: American
Keyword: pressure cooker steel cut oats
Servings: 2 servings
Calories: 150 kcal
Author: Sandy Clifton
Ingredients
  • ½ cup Steel Cut Oats* Regular, not the Quick type.
  • 1 ¼ cup Water
  • 1 tsp Butter
  • Pinch of Salt
Optional - Any or All of These (Whatever you would normally cook with the oats)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • ¼ cup Raisins
  • ½ Chopped Apple
  • ½ tsp Cinnamon
Instructions
Cooking Directly in Inner Liner
  1. Add all ingredients to the Instant Pot and stir.

  2. Close the lid and set the steam release knob to the Sealing position.

  3. Press the Pressure Cook (or Manual) button, then the +/- button to select 10 minutes.

  4. After cooking cycle ends, let naturally release pressure for 10 minutes. Let sit for 12 minutes for a bit creamier result.

Top with your favorite toppings: berries, nuts, brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, milk, etc.
Optional Cooking Method: Toasting the Oats Before Pressure Cooking
  1. Add 2 Tbsp butter to the pot on Sauté mode and brown the dry oats for a few minutes prior to pressure cooking them. Proceed by adding the liquid and other ingredients and pressure cooking after toasting/browning. This brings out a nutty flavor that many people really like!

Pot-in-Pot Method (Better for making a single serving, or when there's not enough liquid to bring the pressure cooker to pressure)
  1. Add oatmeal, water, salt, and any other ingredients to an oven safe stainless steel or baking dish/bowl (I have a 1 quart size oven safe round baking dish that I use, and sometimes I use a 1 quart stainless steel bowl).

  2. Add one cup of water to the Instant Pot's inner liner.

  3. Place the trivet or rack that came with the pot in the inner liner (if you don't have that one, use a rack without tall legs as the bowl may sit up too high).

  4. Set the bowl of oats on the rack (You may need to use a sling to do this if your dish or rack doesn't have handles). Leave bowl uncovered.

  5. Close the lid of the Instant Pot and set the steam release knob to the Sealing position.

  6. Press the Manual (or Pressure Cook) button, then the + or - button to select 10 minutes.

  7. After cooking cycle ends, let naturally release pressure for 10 minutes. Let sit for 12 minutes for a bit creamier result.

Cook Times for Different Types of Oats (10 minute Natural Release on all types)
  1. Steel Cut Oats - 10 minutes

Steel Cut Oats (Quick) - 5 minutes

Old Fashioned Oats (Rolled Oats ) - 2 minutes

    Quick Oats - 1 minute

Oat Groats (Whole Oats) - 20 minutes

Recipe Notes

*This recipe is easy to double: 1 cup of dry steel cut oats to 2 ½ cups of water, 2 tsp butter. Same cooking time as the recipe states.

Your results may vary. Oats differ by brand, and by region/conditions that they were grown in.

Once you test a batch out, you will have a good idea of what will work for you and the type of oats you are making.

Your results may vary, as mine did. Consider the age of your oats, your altitude, and the model of pressure cooker you have.

Yes, it will fit. Just go slowly on the pressure release so it doesn't come out of the vent.
