Halloween Witch Hat Cupcakes

We love Halloween in our house. The Fall leaves, pumpkins, spooky decorations, and the yummy treats are all so fun! It's even more fun if you have a Halloween party to go to, or host! There are lots of creative things you can make for the food.

Cupcakes are so easy to make and can feed a crowd. You can do anything your imagination can think up to decorate them for Halloween! The night sky's the limit!

Dark chocolate is one of my favorite things to snack on, and it just so happens to be a perfect Halloween treat base, due to its dark as night color. My Dark Chocolate Halloween Cookies are awesome!

Halloween Witch Hat Cupcakes are dark and chocolatey, with a sweet surprise in the middle! Sweetened green cream cheese! This is a totally optional step, but it makes your cupcakes magical!

It doesn't have to be green, you can make the filling, purple, blood red or pumpkin orange. Or just leave it white. Make these cupcakes how you like them. The kids will love helping make the witch's hats!

For the witch hat decoration, you can use a whole sandwich cookie, or just one of the chocolate wafers. You decide how you want it to look. If you want orange bands around the hats, do that instead of green, or do both!

Using a boxed dark chocolate cake mix makes this quicker and easier than making cupcakes from scratch. But feel free to do so if you want!

As I said before, the cream cheese filling is optional, so if you don't want to take that extra step, just leave it out.

Your Halloween Witch Hat Cupcakes will still be so yummy and cute! Everyone will be complimenting you on how adorable they look, and how scary delicious they taste!

Ingredients
  • 1 (15.25 oz) box Dark Chocolate Cake Mix
  • 3 Eggs (or follow package amount)
  • ½ cup Oil (or follow package amount)
  • 1 ¼ cups Water (or follow package amount)
Cream Cheese Filling*
  • 8 oz Cream Cheese (room temperature)
  • ½ cup Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
To Color the Filling Green
  • 34 drops Green Food Coloring
  • 3 drops Yellow Food Coloring
  • 2 drops Blue Food Coloring
For the Witch Hats
  • 24 Chocolate Sandwich Cookies with green (mint) filling, or any type you want
  • 24 Dark Chocolate Kisses Candy
  • 1 (16 oz) tub Dark Chocolate Frosting
  • 1 small Squeeze Tube of Green Frosting
Instructions
  1. Heat oven to 350° F (or follow cake mix package temperature).

  2. Prepare the cake mix in a mixing bowl and set aside.

  3. Use a hand mixer to mix the cream cheese, sugar, egg, and vanilla. Mix just until combined.

  4. If you want the filling green, add the food coloring and mix just until color is even. Put the bowl of filling in the fridge to chill and firm up a little.

  5. Line two 12 cup cupcake pans with black cupcake liners.

  6. Using an ice cream scoop, fill the cupcake liners ⅓ full.

  7. Remove the filling from the fridge and use a small spoon to add a spoonful of the filling to each. Discard any unused filling.

  8. Top off the cupcake liners with the remaining batter, covering the filling.

  9. Bake for 13 to 16 minutes, (or follow package time for cupcakes) or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.

  10. Remove from oven and let cool in the pans for 30 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.

  11. While the cupcakes are cooling, make the witch hats by using a small dab of the frosting to stick the kiss candy to the cookie. Then pipe a small band of the green frosting from the tube around the base of the kiss candy. It's okay if they are not perfect!

  12. When cupcakes are cooled, frost the tops of the cupcakes with the dark chocolate frosting, then place a witch hat on top of each.

Recipe Notes
