Equipment

  • Large Skillet with Lid (high-sided) or a Dutch oven with lid

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Lean Ground Beef
  • 1 large Onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Italian Seasoning
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon Balsamic Vinegar (optional, but very good)
  • 1 cup Beef Broth
  • 1 15-ounce can Diced Tomatoes
  • 1 15-ounce can Tomato Sauce
  • 1 head Green Cabbage, chopped

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, brown the ground beef until mostly done. Then add the onion and cook until softened. Drain any grease.
  • Add the garlic, salt, black pepper, paprika, Italian Seasoning, Worcestershire, and balsamic, if using. Stir well.
  • Add the can of diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and beef broth. Bring to a low simmer and cook about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally so nothing sticks. The sauce should reduce a little.
  • Add the chopped cabbage on top and press it down into the sauce with a spoon. Then put the lid on the pan and bring back to a low simmer.
  • When the cabbage starts to cook down, you should be able to stir the mixture carefully without it spilling over. Just cook and stir occasionally, until the cabbage is soft to your liking.
  • Serve over rice.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to avoid excess grease.
  • You can swap ground turkey or pork for the beef.
  • Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 4 days and freeze beautifully.
